Deeply shocked and saddened after the terror attacks happened in New Zealand on 15th March, 2019. One cannot imagine that a terror attack was live streamed in the social media. The same thing could not have happened in any other formats of mass media other than the Cyberspace. Now, it’s time to talk and focus on censorship/ moderation of the contents posted in cyberspace.
I accept that freedom of speech in cyberspace is essential. However, it does not mean that a censorship or moderation is not required.
Now, it’s time for us to seriously look into the existing Cyberlaws, modifying and empowering them in such a way that horrible things doesn’t happen in future. It is not only about the live streaming of terror attacks, but also about a lot of published content in cyberspace which actually should have not been that way. When talking about Cyberlaws, I would like to mention it as Internationally accepted/ accredited laws which focus on drawing a line between freedom of speech and hate speech.
As an immediate response, social media shall come up with different multi factor authentication, censorship approach for the contents to be posted, instead of a single window/ authority authentication system.
As an end note, all of us who are using cyberspace should enjoy that space with responsibility!!!
